Indian madder, also known as Chay root or Chay-aver (Oldenlandia umbellata), is a petite shrub or herb standing at 30–50 cm in height. Indigenous to southern India, it has historical usage in India, Sri Lanka, and northern Burma. However, it yields less than a quarter of the dye obtained from traditional madder sources.
