Guggul is the resinous substance derived from various plants indigenous to India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Key species encompass Commiphora wightii, Commiphora gileadensis, Commiphora mukul, Boswellia serrata, and Boswellia sacra, all belonging to the Burseraceae family, commonly referred to as the incense family. Extracted in a manner reminiscent of harvesting maple syrup from maple trees, Guggul sap, also known as guggul, gum guggul, guggula, or gugulipid, is tapped from these plants.
