The fragrant root of American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) takes on the appearance of a diminutive parsnip, developing a fork as it matures. Typically reaching a height of 6 to 18 inches (15 to 46 cm), the plant typically sports three leaves, each adorned with three to five leaflets measuring 2 to 5 inches (5 to 13 cm) in length.
