Botanical name: Trachyspermum copticum
Ajowan essential oil, alternatively referred to as ajwain seed oil, is obtained through the steam distillation of the seeds of the botanical plant scientifically known as Trachyspermum ammi, syn. Carum copticum. This oil, with a history of medicinal use spanning thousands of years, is renowned for its antioxidant properties. Pure ajwain oil emits a herbaceous, spicy, and medicinal fragrance with a robust top note reminiscent of Thyme. Originating in the Eastern Mediterranean, possibly Egypt, it made its way to India through the Greeks and is currently cultivated in regions such as India, Central Europe, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
