Casuarina plants, belonging to the genus, are dioecious trees, except for C. equisetifolia, which is monoecious. These trees feature fissured or scaly greyish-brown to black bark. The branchlets are soft, pendulous, and green, serving as photosynthetic structures. The leaves are reduced to scale-like formations, arranged in whorls of 5 to 20 around the branchlets.
