The Eucalyptus genus is characterized by bark that can be smooth, fibrous, hard, or stringy. The leaves of these plants contain oil glands, and the sepals and petals are fused to create a protective “cap” or operculum over the stamens. The distinctive fruit of Eucalyptus is a woody capsule commonly known as a “gumnut.”
