Macassar oil, initially formulated from Macassar ebony oil, gained prominence among Western European men during the 1800s and early 1900s as a preferred hair conditioner for grooming and styling. Alexander Rowland (1747–1823), a renowned London barber, played a pivotal role in popularizing this hair care product. In an era where barbers often crafted their hair preparations, Rowland introduced Rowland’s Macassar Oil around 1793.
