Seaweed is a popular term for thousands of species of large, multicellular marine algae, also known as macroalgae. The term doesn’t have taxonomic value, but it includes some types of red, brown, and green algae:
Brown algae: Also known as Phaeophyceae, this includes gulfweed and sea holly, such as Sargassum. Laminaria, also known as kelp, is the largest and most complex brown alga, and is considered one of the most important seaweed genera. Ascophyllum nodosum, also known as Norwegian laminaria, rock algae, or Norwegian kelp, is another brown alga.
Red algae: Also known as Rhodophyceae, this includes Gracilaria, which produces agar, and Kappaphycus alvarezii, also known as Eucheuma cottonii, which is a commercial source of carrageenans. Palmaria palmata, also known as red dulse, has smooth, leathery fronds that are deep red in autumn and greenish/yellow in summer.
Green algae: Also known as Chlorophyceae.
Seaweed can range in size from a few inches to 180 feet long, and can be found in many different shapes, sizes, and colors. Some seaweeds are attached to rocks or the ocean floor, while others float on the water’s surface. Humans have long cultivated seaweed for food, fertilizer, and as a source material for chemicals like carrageenan.
